Annual Production

Cambodia used to be the world number one raw cashew nuts (RCN) producing country in 2021 because the production increased to more than 1,108,000 tons only       exported to Vietnam excluding flowing to other countries and local processing. We estimated that more than 1,108,000 tons of RCNs produced by Cambodian in 2021. However, the production had sharply been dropped to round 670,000 tons in 2022 due to the bad climate and quality to make some farmers decided to chop cashew trees and converted to field crops mainly to cassava. and 690,000 tons in 2023. The table below shows the total production of Cambodia cashew from 2021 – 2023.

Cashew Nut Shells

Cambodia have annually processed cashew nuts only 5% of the total RCNs, account for around 35,000 if the total production of RCNs 700,000 tons in 2023. According to the experiences of Cambodian cashew processors, there are around 65-70% of RCNs, therefore it accounts for around 22,750 – 24,500 tons. Table below indicates the annual production, processing and cashew nuts shells from 2021-2023

RCNs Export Table
Year Exported RCNs Local Processed RCNs Estimate Cashew Nut Shells
2021 1,108,000
2022 690,000 23,000
2023 700,000 35,000 22,750
  • Cashew Apples

Most of the Cambodian cashew farmers ignore the cashew apples in the farms after collecting cashew nuts. According to our practical experiences and observation, in average one kilogram of cashew nuts equals five kilogram of cashew apples if we would estimate that 50% were defected, at least we still have 50% good quality of apple. If Cambodia produced 700,000 tons of RCNs per year as 2023, so we would have 350,000 tons of cashew apple per year.

  • Testa/Skin of Cashew Kernels

The volume of cashew testa is mainly based on the number of companies who have been processing white kernels for market. Up to now there have been very few cashew enterprises process white kernels for both local and international markets. The total of white kernel production is round 1,500-2,000 tons/year and the testa is accounted for 2% of the white kernels which equal to round 30-40 tons/year only.

  • Defected Kernels

There are two types of defected kernels (i) the defected kernels with testa and (ii) the defected white kernels. According to the cashew nut processing experiences, the total defected kernels consist of 5-6% of the white kernels. So, if Cambodia annually produce 5,000-7,000 tons of the kernels per year, the defected kernels should be 250-420 tons per year.
